THE leaves of green gram (mung: Phaseolus aureus) are ovate in outline with a pointed
apex. In 1956 while studying the Fs progenies of a cross, T. 1 (an improved V.P.
type) x -+T 49 (an introduction from Kulu, Punjab), a variant plant was observed in
one of the F 3 progenies. The variant plant was poor in growth and possessed
crinkled, lanceolate leaves (Fig. I). The breeding behaviour and genetics of this mutant
are described.
