PATEL (1957) while discussing the scope of arecanut improvement by breeding
has recommended growing seednuts collected from open-pollinated, highly
productive and well isolated gardens and growing seedlings from the crossed
nuts obtained through controlled cross pollination of highly productive trees.
Based on the study of dispersal of pollen in arecanut, Murthy and Bavappa
(1961) have suggested a scheme for the production of elite seeds. Breeding
problems in arecanut have not been discussed from any other angle.
