IN an earlier paper, we reported the important role of introgressive hybridiza.;
tion in genus Saccharum (Jagathesan, Venkataraman and Shah, 1967). Detailed
studies with respect to S. officinarum and S. robustum, two closely related species,
were taken up to trace the source of variation in these two species. Earlier
studies with these two species have shown that they could be considered as
related on the basis of geographical distribution, morphology and cytology, and
it is generally accepted that S. robustum has played an important role in the
origin of S. officinarum (see discussion in Artschwager and Brandes, 1958). To
study this problem, pictorialized scatter diagrams and hybrid indices were used
(Anderson,1949).
