THE area under tobacco in Andhra Pradesh is over 3·5 lakhs of acres. Of this nearly
50 per cent. is under desi or country tobaccos which are air-cured or sun-cured. The
country tobaccos grown in Andhra Pradesh belong to the species Nicotiana tabacum.
But they are used for different products such as cheap cigarettes, local cheroots (chuttas)
and cigars, for chewing and snuff. One distinct type grown exclusively in the deltaic
islands (lankas) ofGodavari is famous for its aroma, burn, flav0ur and ash characteristics.
It is also noted for its high nicotine content. This tobacco, popularly known as ' lanka
tobacco " is grown on an area of over 10,000 acres. It is of sufficiently good quality
to be used as filler and binder by some cigar manufacturers.
