Abstract

The genus Lens is represented by five species namely, L. culinaris (Medik), L. orienta/is (Boiss.), L. ervoides (Brign Grande>., L. nigricans (Bieb Godr) and L. montbrettii (Fisch and May). L. culinaris, the only cultivated species is further divided in two major groups: microspenna with small seeds and macrospenna with bold seeds. Almost all the indigenous . varieties are microspenna with red cotyledons whereas exotic macrospenna varieties possess yellow cotyledons.
